Reaction BaO2(s) BaO(s) + O2(g); H = +ve. In equilibrium condition, pressure of O2 depends on

  1. increase mass of BaO2
  2. increase mass of BaO
  3. increase temperature on equilibrium
  4. increase mass of BaO2 and BaO both

Answer

(3) increase temperature on equilibrium

Solution

For this heterogeneous equilibrium, the active masses of the pure solids are taken as constant (unity).

⇒ Kp = pO2

∴ At equilibrium, pO2 is fixed by Kp alone and does not depend on the amounts of BaO2 or BaO.

∵ Kp changes only with temperature, and the reaction is endothermic, increasing the temperature increases Kp and hence pO2.
