The solubility product of AgI at 25 C is 1.0 10-16 mol2 L-2. The solubility of AgI in 10-4 N solution of KI at 25 C is approximately (in mol L-1)

  1. 1.0 10-16
  2. 1.0 10-12
  3. 1.0 10-10
  4. 1.0 10-8

Answer

(2) 1.0 10-12

Solution

For KI, normality = molarity ⇒ [I-] = 10-4 mol L-1 (common ion).

Let the solubility of AgI be s: [Ag+] = s, [I-] = s + 10-4 10-4 (s is very small)

Ksp = [Ag+][I-]

⇒ 1.0 10-16 = s 10-4

⇒ s = 1.0 10-12 mol L-1
