A hydrogen gas electrode is made by dipping platinum wire in a solution of pH = 10 and by passing hydrogen gas around the platinum wire at one atm pressure. The oxidation potential of electrode would be

  1. 0.118 V
  2. 1.18 V
  3. 0.059 V
  4. 0.59 V

Answer

(4) 0.59 V

Solution

Oxidation at the electrode: H2(g) 2H+(aq) + 2e-

Eox = E ox - 0.0592 [H+]2pH2

∵ E ox = 0 and pH2 = 1 atm

⇒ Eox = -0.059 [H+]

= 0.059 pH

= 0.059 10 = 0.59 V

Answer: (4)
