A solution contains Fe2+, Fe3+ and I- ions. This solution was treated with iodine at 35 C. E for Fe3+/Fe2+ is +0.77 V and E for I2/2I- = 0.536 V. The favourable redox reaction is

  1. I2 will be reduced to I-
  2. there will be no redox reaction
  3. I- will be oxidised to I2
  4. Fe2+ will be oxidised to Fe3+

Answer

(3) I- will be oxidised to I2

Solution

∵ E Fe3+/Fe2+ (0.77 V) > E I2/I- (0.536 V)

⇒ Fe3+ is the stronger oxidising agent and I- the stronger reducing agent.

2Fe3+ + 2I- 2Fe2+ + I2

E cell = 0.77 - 0.536 = +0.234 V (positive ⇒ spontaneous)

The reverse change (I2 oxidising Fe2+) has E cell = -0.234 V, so it is not favourable.

∴ I- will be oxidised to I2.

Answer: (3)
