The electrode potentials for Cu2+(aq) + e- Cu+(aq) and Cu+(aq) + e- Cu(s) are +0.15 V and +0.50 V respectively. The value of E Cu2+/Cu will be

  1. 0.500 V
  2. 0.325 V
  3. 0.650 V
  4. 0.150 V

Answer

(2) 0.325 V

Solution

Electrode potentials are not additive, but G values are ( G = -nFE ).

Cu2+ + e- Cu+; G1 = -1 F 0.15

Cu+ + e- Cu; G2 = -1 F 0.50

Adding: Cu2+ + 2e- Cu; G = G1 + G2

-2FE = -0.15F - 0.50F

E = 0.652 = 0.325 V

Answer: (2)
