Toxic agents present in food which interfere with thyroxine synthesis lead to the development of

  1. toxic goitre
  2. cretinism
  3. simple goitre
  4. thyrotoxicosis

Answer

(3) simple goitre

Solution

Substances in food that interfere with thyroxine synthesis (goitrogens) lower the level of thyroid hormones in blood, just like iodine deficiency.

⇒ Low thyroxine increases TSH secretion from the anterior pituitary, which causes enlargement of the thyroid gland.

⇒ As per NCERT, this hypothyroidism and enlargement of the thyroid gland is called goitre (simple goitre).

⇒ Toxic goitre and thyrotoxicosis are due to excess thyroxine; cretinism results from hypothyroidism during foetal life or infancy.
