Represented below is the inheritance pattern of a certain type of traits in humans. Which one of the following conditions could be an example of this pattern ? [figure]

  1. Haemophilia
  2. Sickle cell anaemia
  3. Thalassemia
  4. Phenylketonuria

Answer

(1) Haemophilia

Solution

The figure shows criss-cross inheritance: the trait passes from mother to son and from father to daughter.

∵ A son receives his X chromosome only from the mother, and a daughter receives the father's X chromosome ⇒ this is the pattern of an X-linked recessive trait.

As per NCERT, haemophilia is a sex-linked recessive disease (gene on the X chromosome), transmitted from an unaffected carrier female to some of the male progeny.

Sickle cell anaemia, thalassemia and phenylketonuria are autosomal recessive disorders.

∴ Haemophilia fits the given pattern.
