Which statements are NOT TRUE about XeO2F2? Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. B, D and E Only
  2. B and D Only
  3. B, C and E Only
  4. A and D Only

Answer

(3) B, C and E Only

Solution

In XeO2F2, Xe forms two Xe=O double bonds and two Xe–F single bonds and keeps one lone pair.

σ-bond pairs = 4, lone pair = 1 sp3d, trigonal bipyramidal arrangement with lone pair equatorial see-saw shape. A is true.

Electrons in the valence shell of Xe = 2 × 4 (two Xe=O) + 2 × 2 (two Xe–F) + 2 (lone pair) = 14 electrons = 7 electron pairs.

B (5 electron pairs) and E (16 electrons) are not true.

The two O atoms are equatorial: O–Xe–O angle ≈ 105° (not 180°) C is not true.

The two F atoms are axial: F–Xe–F angle ≈ 174°, close to 180° D is true.

NOT TRUE: B, C and E.

Answer: (3)
