What does the filiform apparatus do at the entrance into ovule?

  1. It brings about opening of the pollen tube.
  2. It guides pollen tube from a synergid to egg.
  3. It helps in the entry of pollen tube into a synergid.
  4. It prevents entry of more than one pollen tube into the embryo sac.

Answer

(3) It helps in the entry of pollen tube into a synergid.

Solution

As per NCERT, the synergids have special cellular thickenings at the micropylar tip called filiform apparatus, which play an important role in guiding the pollen tubes into the synergid.

⇒ The pollen tube enters the ovule through the micropyle and then enters one of the synergids through the filiform apparatus.

⇒ Inside the synergid the pollen tube releases the two male gametes; the movement of a male gamete to the egg is not guided by the filiform apparatus.

∴ The filiform apparatus helps in the entry of the pollen tube into a synergid.
