Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer
(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Solution
Statement I: oxygen normally forms two bonds (covalency 2); as it has no d orbitals its covalency can rise at most to four (e.g. in H3O+ it is 3).
In SO2, oxygen is more electronegative than S ⇒ O.S. of O = −2.
In OF2, F is more electronegative than O ⇒ x + 2(-1) = 0 ⇒ O.S. of O = +2.
∴ Statement I is true.
Statement II: as per NCERT, the anomalous behaviour of oxygen is due to its small size and high electronegativity (it also lacks d orbitals) ⇒ true.
