Nitrobenzene on reaction with conc. HNO3/H2SO4 at 80-100 C forms which one of the following products?
- 1, 4-Dinitrobenzene
- 1, 2, 4 - Trinitrobenzene
- 1, 2-Dinitrobenzene
- 1, 3-Dinitrobenzene
Answer
(4) 1, 3-Dinitrobenzene
Solution
As per NCERT, the -NO2 group withdraws electrons by -R and -I effects, so it deactivates the ring and is meta-directing.
∵ Electron density at the meta position is relatively higher than at ortho/para positions.
⇒ The second -NO2 group enters the meta position:
C6H5NO2 [80-100 C]conc. HNO3/H2SO4 1,3-C6H4(NO2)2
∴ The product is 1,3-dinitrobenzene.
