Which one of the following statements is false in respect of viability of mammalian sperm?

  1. Viability of sperm is determined by its motility
  2. Sperms must be concentrated in a thick suspension
  3. Sperm is viable for only up to 24 hours
  4. Survival of sperm depends on the pH of the medium and is more active in alkaline medium

Answer

(3) Sperm is viable for only up to 24 hours

Solution

Viability of a sperm means its ability to fertilise the ovum, and it is judged by its motility.

∵ Sperms are kept concentrated in a thick suspension (semen) and remain active in the slightly alkaline medium of semen and the female tract, statements (1), (2) and (4) are correct.

∵ Human sperms remain viable in the female reproductive tract for about 48–72 hours, not only up to 24 hours (it is the ovum that remains viable for about 24 hours).

∴ Statement (3) is false.

Answer: (3)
