Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(3) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Statement I: bond angles F2O ≈ 103° < H2O ≈ 104.5° < Cl2O ≈ 111°

∵ In F2O the bond pairs are drawn towards the more electronegative F ⇒ less bp–bp repulsion ⇒ smaller angle.

∵ In Cl2O the bond pairs lie closer to O and the large Cl atoms repel each other ⇒ larger angle.

⇒ Statement I is true.

Statement II: As per NCERT, most group 14 tetrahalides are covalent; the exceptions are SnF4 and PbF4, which are ionic. SiF4 is covalent.

⇒ Statement II is false.

Answer: (3)
