In Antirrhinum (Snapdragon), a red flower was crossed with a white flower and in F1 generation, pink flowers were obtained. When pink flowers were selfed, the F2 generation showed white, red and pink flowers. Choose the incorrect statement from the following :
- Ratio of F2 is 14 (Red) : 24 (Pink) : 14 (White)
- Law of Segregation does not apply in this experiment
- This experiment does not follow the Principle of Dominance
- Pink colour in F1 is due to incomplete dominance
Answer
(2) Law of Segregation does not apply in this experiment
Solution
Red (RR) White (rr) F1 Rr = Pink (incomplete dominance).
Selfing Rr Rr F2 = 1 RR (Red) : 2 Rr (Pink) : 1 rr (White) = 14 : 24 : 14.
As per NCERT, in incomplete dominance the phenotypic ratio deviates from 3 : 1, but the genotypic ratio remains 1 : 2 : 1 as in any Mendelian monohybrid cross; the alleles still separate during gamete formation.
The Law of Segregation does apply; only the Principle of Dominance is not followed.
Hence, statement (2) is incorrect.
