A full wave rectifier circuit with diodes (D1) and (D2) is shown in the figure. If input supply voltage Vin = 220 (100 t) volt, then at t = 15 msec [figure]
- D1 and D2 both are forward biased
- D1 and D2 both are reverse biased
- D1 is forward biased, D2 is reverse biased
- D1 is reverse biased, D2 is forward biased.
Answer
(3) D1 is forward biased, D2 is reverse biased, (4) D1 is reverse biased, D2 is forward biased.
Solution
At t = 15 ms: 100 t = 100 0.015 = 1.5
Vin = 220 (1.5 ) = -220 V
So the input is in its negative half cycle (at the negative peak).
In the positive half cycle D1 conducts; in the negative half cycle the polarity of the secondary reverses, the end connected to D1 becomes negative with respect to the centre tap and the end connected to D2 becomes positive.
Hence D1 is reverse biased and D2 is forward biased.
Since the polarity of the transformer winding is not marked in the figure, option (3) (D₁ forward biased, D₂ reverse biased) is also accepted.
Answer: (3), (4)
