Which property of colloidal solution is independent of charge on the colloidal particles?
- Electro-osmosis
- Tyndall effect
- Coagulation
- Electrophoresis
Answer
(2) Tyndall effect
Solution
As per NCERT, the Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by colloidal particles; it is observed only when the diameter of the dispersed particles is not much smaller than the wavelength of the light used and the refractive indices of the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium differ greatly in magnitude.
⇒ It depends on particle size, not on charge.
∵ Electrophoresis and electro-osmosis are movements under an electric field due to charge, and coagulation is the neutralisation of the charge on the particles.
∴ Tyndall effect is independent of the charge on colloidal particles.
