Choose the correct option for graphical representation of Boyle's law, which shows a graph of pressure vs. volume of a gas at different temperatures :

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

Boyle's law: at constant temperature, pV = constant each isotherm is a rectangular hyperbola.

From pV = nRT, at the same volume a higher temperature gives a higher pressure.

The isotherm at 600 K lies farthest from the axes and the one at 200 K is closest, as in graph (1).
