Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 8 April (Evening Shift)

Let A be the region enclosed by the parabola y2 = 2x and the line x = 24. Then the maximum area of the rectangle inscribed in the region A is .

Answer

128

Solution

Two corners on the parabola: ( t22, t ); the other two on x = 24

[figure]

Area: A(t) = 2t (24 - t22 ) = 48t - t3, 0 < t < 4 3

A'(t) = 48 - 3t2 = 0 t = 4; A''(4) = -24 < 0 ⇒ maximum

∴ A = 48 4 - 43 = 192 - 64 = 128

Answer: 128
