For a hollow cylinder and a solid cylinder rolling without slipping on an inclined plane, then which of these reaches earlier

  1. solid cylinder
  2. hollow cylinder
  3. both simultaneously
  4. can't say anything

Answer

(1) solid cylinder

Solution

For rolling without slipping down an incline:

a = g 1 + k2R2

Solid cylinder: k2R2 = 12 a = 23 g

Hollow cylinder: k2R2 = 1 a = 12 g

The solid cylinder has greater acceleration and reaches the bottom first.
