Which of the following is not a hereditary disease?

  1. Cretinism
  2. Cystic fibrosis
  3. Haemophilia
  4. Thalassemia

Answer

(1) Cretinism

Solution

Cystic fibrosis (autosomal recessive), haemophilia (X-linked recessive) and thalassemia (autosomal recessive) are Mendelian disorders passed from parents to offspring.

⇒ As per NCERT, cretinism results from hyposecretion of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) during pregnancy or in early childhood, often due to iodine deficiency in the diet.

∴ Cretinism is a hormonal (endocrine) disorder, not a hereditary disease.
