Given : (i) Cu2+ + 2e- Cu, E = 0.337 V (ii) Cu2+ + e- Cu+, E = 0.153 V Electrode potential, E for the reaction, Cu+ + e- Cu, will be

  1. 0.90 V
  2. 0.30 V
  3. 0.38 V
  4. 0.52 V

Answer

(4) 0.52 V

Solution

Electrode potentials are not additive, but G = - nFE values are.

Required = (i) – (ii):

G3 = G1 - G2

-1 F E3 = -2F(0.337) - [-1F(0.153)]

E3 = 0.674 - 0.153

= 0.521 V 0.52 V

Answer: (4)
