Given below are two statements In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
- Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
Answer
(2) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
Solution
As per NCERT, boiling points of group 16 hydrides: H2O 373 K, H2S 213 K, H2Se 232 K, H2Te 269 K.
⇒ Order: H2S < H2Se < H2Te < H2O
∵ H2O has the highest boiling point due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, so Statement I is incorrect.
⇒ From H2S to H2Te the boiling point rises with molar mass, but H2O (lowest molar mass) has the highest boiling point; so the boiling points of these hydrides do not increase with molar mass — Statement II is incorrect.
∴ Both statements are incorrect.
