Urea reacts with water to form A which will decompose to form B. B when passed through Cu2+(aq), deep blue colour solution C is formed. What is the formula of C from the following?
- [Cu(NH3)4]2+
- Cu(OH)2
- CuCO3 Cu(OH)2
- CuSO4
Answer
(1) [Cu(NH3)4]2+
Solution
As per NCERT (preparation of ammonia), urea is hydrolysed to ammonium carbonate (A), which decomposes to ammonia (B):
NH2CONH2 + 2H2O (NH4)2CO3
(NH4)2CO3 2NH3 + H2O + CO2
Ammonia forms a deep blue complex with Cu2+ ions:
Cu2+(aq) + 4NH3(aq) [Cu(NH3)4]2+(aq) (deep blue)
∴ C is [Cu(NH3)4]2+.
