Darwin's finches are a good example of –

  1. Convergent evolution
  2. Connecting link
  3. Industrial melanism
  4. Adaptive radiation

Answer

(4) Adaptive radiation

Solution

As per NCERT, during his journey Darwin went to the Galapagos Islands and observed many varieties of small black birds (Darwin's finches). From the original seed-eating finches, other forms with altered beaks arose, enabling them to become insectivorous and vegetarian finches.

⇒ This process of evolution of different species in a given geographical area starting from a point and radiating to other areas of geography (habitats) is called adaptive radiation.

Answer: (4)

In the case of peppered moth ( Biston betularia) the black-coloured form became dominant over the light-coloured form in England during industrial revolution. This is an example of -

  1. Natural selection whereby the darker forms were selected
  2. Protective mimicry
  3. Inheritance of darker colour character acquired due to the darker environment
  4. Appearance of the darker coloured individuals due to very poor sunlight
