Which one of the following pairs of items correctly belongs to the category of organs mentioned against it?

  1. Nephridia of earthworm and Malpighian tubules of cockroach - excretory organs
  2. Wings of honey bee and wings of crow - homologous organs
  3. Thorn of Bougainvillea and tendrils of Cucurbita - analogous organs
  4. Nictitating membrane and blind spot in human eye - vestigial organs

Answer

(1) Nephridia of earthworm and Malpighian tubules of cockroach - excretory organs

Solution

As per NCERT, the excretory organs of annelids (earthworm) are nephridia and those of insects (cockroach) are Malpighian tubules. Hence (1) is correct.

⇒ As per NCERT, wings of butterfly (insect) and of birds are analogous, not homologous, so (2) is wrong.

⇒ As per NCERT, the thorn of Bougainvillea and the tendril of Cucurbita (both modified stems) represent homology, so (3) is wrong.

⇒ The nictitating membrane is vestigial in humans, but the blind spot is only the point where the optic nerve leaves the eye, not a vestigial organ, so (4) is wrong.

Answer: (1)
