Two resistors 2 and 3 are connected in the gaps of bridge as shown in figure. The null point is obtained with the contact of jockey at some point on wire XY. When an unknown resistor is connected in parallel with 3 resistor, the null point is shifted by 22.5 cm toward Y. The resistance of unknown resistor is . [figure]

Answer
(4) 2
Solution
Wire XY of a metre bridge is 100 cm long. At balance: PQ = l100 - l (l measured from X)
Initially: 23 = l1100 - l1 l1 = 40 cm
With S in parallel with 3 , the right-gap resistance decreases, so the null point moves toward Y:
l2 = 40 + 22.5 = 62.5 cm
2Q' = 62.537.5 = 53 Q' = 1.2
3S3 + S = 1.2 3S = 3.6 + 1.2S
S = 2
