The Bt toxin in genetically engineered Bt cotton kills the pest by:

  1. Creating pores in the midgut
  2. Damaging the respiratory system
  3. Degenerating the nervous system
  4. Altering the pH of body fluids

Answer

(1) Creating pores in the midgut

Solution

The inactive Bt protoxin is activated by the alkaline pH of the insect gut. The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and creates pores, causing swelling and lysis of the cells and finally death of the insect.

In gene therapy of Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) deficiency, the patient requires periodic infusion of genetically engineered lymphocytes because:

  1. Retroviral vector is introduced into these lymphocytes.
  2. Gene isolated from marrow cells producing ADA is introduced into cells at embryonic stages
  3. Lymphocytes from patient's blood are grown in culture, outside the body
  4. Genetically engineered lymphocytes are not immortal cells.

Now-a-days it is possible to detect the mutated gene causing cancer by allowing radioactive probe to hybridise to its complementary DNA in a clone of cells, followed by its detection using autoradiography because:

  1. mutated gene does not appear on photographic film as the probe has complementarity with it
  2. mutated gene partially appears on a photographic film
  3. mutated gene completely and clearly appears on a photographic film
  4. mutated gene does not appear on a photographic film as the probe has no complementarity with it
