Statements related to human Insulin are given below. Which statements is/are correct about genetically engineered Insulin? Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. A, B and D only
  2. B only
  3. C and D only
  4. C, D and E only

Answer

(2) B only

Solution

As per NCERT, in 1983 Eli Lilly, an American company, prepared two DNA sequences corresponding to the A and B chains of human insulin and introduced them into plasmids of E. coli to produce the insulin chains. Chains A and B were produced separately, extracted and combined by creating disulphide bonds to form human insulin.

Statement B is correct for genetically engineered insulin.

Statements A and D describe the natural pro-hormone (with the extra C-peptide) made in the pancreas — this processing step was avoided in genetically engineered insulin.

Statements C and E describe insulin from the pancreas of slaughtered cattle and pigs (animal insulin), not genetically engineered insulin.

Now-a-days it is possible to detect the mutated gene causing cancer by allowing radioactive probe to hybridise to its complementary DNA in a clone of cells, followed by its detection using autoradiography because:

  1. mutated gene does not appear on photographic film as the probe has complementarity with it
  2. mutated gene partially appears on a photographic film
  3. mutated gene completely and clearly appears on a photographic film
  4. mutated gene does not appear on a photographic film as the probe has no complementarity with it
