The following structures are : [figure]

  1. enantiomers.
  2. identical molecules.
  3. diastereomers.
  4. meso compounds.

Answer

(2) identical molecules.

Solution

Groups on the central carbon: Br, Cl, CH3 and Me — "Me" is the symbol for a methyl group, so two identical CH3 groups are attached.

⇒ only three different groups ⇒ the carbon is not a chiral centre; the compound is (CH3)2CBrCl (2-bromo-2-chloropropane), which is achiral.

An achiral molecule is superimposable on its mirror image ⇒ the two drawings (mirror images of each other) represent the same molecule.

∴ identical molecules

Answer: (2)
