Which one of the following polymers is prepared by condensation polymerisation?

  1. Teflon
  2. Natural rubber
  3. Polystyrene
  4. Nylon-6,6

Answer

(4) Nylon-6,6

Solution

Teflon (from CF2=CF2), natural rubber (cis-polyisoprene) and polystyrene (from C6H5CH=CH2) are addition polymers: monomers with double bonds add on without loss of any molecule.

As per NCERT, nylon-6,6 is prepared by the condensation polymerisation of hexamethylenediamine with adipic acid under high pressure and at high temperature:

nHOOC(CH2)4COOH + nH2N(CH2)6NH2

553 K, high pressure -[NH(CH2)6NHCO(CH2)4CO]n- + 2nH2O

∴ Nylon-6,6 is a condensation polymer.
