Which one of the following is the correct statement regarding the particular psychotropic drug specified?

  1. Hashish causes after thought perceptions and hallucinations
  2. Morphine leads to delusions and disturbed emotions
  3. Opium stimulates nervous system and causes hallucinations
  4. Barbiturates cause relaxation and temporary euphoria

Answer

(1) Hashish causes after thought perceptions and hallucinations

Solution

Hashish is a cannabinoid obtained from the inflorescences of Cannabis sativa; cannabinoids are hallucinogens that alter thought, perception and cause hallucinations ⇒ correct.

As per NCERT, morphine (an opioid) is a very effective sedative and painkiller; it does not typically cause delusions and disturbed emotions.

Opium (opioids) depresses the central nervous system; it does not stimulate it.

As per NCERT, barbiturates are used as medicines to help patients cope with mental illnesses like depression and insomnia; they are sedatives (CNS depressants), and the statement given for them is not their characteristic effect.

∴ The statement about hashish is correct.
