Which of the following statements is not correct?

  1. In man insulin is synthesised as a proinsulin
  2. The proinsulin has an extra peptide called C-peptide.
  3. Genetically engineered insulin is produced in E. coli.
  4. The functional insulin has A and B chains linked together by hydrogen bonds.

Answer

(4) The functional insulin has A and B chains linked together by hydrogen bonds.

Solution

As per NCERT, insulin consists of two short polypeptide chains, chain A and chain B, that are linked together by disulphide bridges (not hydrogen bonds).

In man, insulin is synthesised as a pro-hormone (proinsulin) which contains an extra stretch called the C-peptide; it is removed during maturation.

Eli Lilly introduced the DNA sequences of chains A and B into plasmids of E. coli to produce insulin chains.

∴ Statement (4) is not correct.
