The tendency of population to remain in genetic equilibrium may be disturbed by :

  1. lack of random mating
  2. random mating
  3. lack of migration
  4. lack of mutations

Answer

(1) lack of random mating

Solution

As per NCERT, the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (constant allele frequencies) is maintained in a population with random mating and no gene flow, mutation, genetic drift or natural selection.

⇒ Lack of migration, lack of mutations and random mating all help to keep the equilibrium.

∵ Non-random mating (lack of random mating) changes genotype frequencies, it disturbs the genetic equilibrium.
