[figure] In the circuit shown, the current through the 4 resistor is 1 amp when the points P and M are connected to a d.c. voltage source. The potential difference between the points M and N is

  1. 0.5 volt
  2. 3.2 volt
  3. 1.5 volt
  4. 1.0 volt

Answer

(2) 3.2 volt

Solution

The 4 and 3 resistors are in parallel and connected directly across P and M.

VPM = 1 4 = 4 V

Lower branch: (0.5 0.5 ) in series with 1

R = 0.25 + 1 = 1.25

Current in the lower branch = 41.25 = 3.2 A

VMN = 3.2 1 = 3.2 V

Answer: (2)
