Function of companion cells is :

  1. Providing water to phloem
  2. Loading of sucrose into sieve elements
  3. Loading of sucrose into sieve elements by passive transport
  4. Providing energy to sieve elements for active transport

Answer

(2) Loading of sucrose into sieve elements

Solution

As per NCERT, companion cells are connected with sieve tube elements by pit fields and help in maintaining the pressure gradient in the sieve tubes.

At the source, sucrose is moved into the companion cells and then loaded into the living phloem sieve tube cells (phloem loading); this loading is an active process, not passive.

∴ Function of companion cells is loading of sucrose into sieve elements.
