The two nearest harmonics of a tube closed at one end and open at other end are 220 Hz and 260 Hz. What is the fundamental frequency of the system ?

  1. 20 Hz
  2. 30 Hz
  3. 40 Hz
  4. 10 Hz

Answer

(1) 20 Hz

Solution

A closed pipe has only odd harmonics: 0, 3 0, 5 0,

Two neighbouring harmonics differ by 2 0

2 0 = 260 - 220 = 40 Hz

0 = 20 Hz

(Check: 220 = 11 20 and 260 = 13 20, both odd harmonics.)
