Which of the following will be most stable diazonium salt RN2+X-?
- CH3N2+X-
- C6H5N2+X-
- CH3CH2N2+X-
- C6H5CH2N2+X-
Answer
(2) C6H5N2+X-
Solution
As per NCERT, primary aliphatic amines form highly unstable alkyldiazonium salts (they decompose at once giving N2), whereas arenediazonium salts are stable at low temperature (273-278 K).
∵ In C6H5N2+ the positive charge is delocalised over the benzene ring by resonance.
CH3N2+, CH3CH2N2+ and C6H5CH2N2+ (the N2+ is on an sp3 carbon) have no such stabilisation.
∴ Benzenediazonium salt is the most stable.
