Products of the following reaction : CH3C CCH2CH3 [(ii) hydrolysis](i) O3 are

  1. CH3COOH + CO2
  2. CH3COOH + HOOC.CH2CH3
  3. CH3CHO + CH3CH2CHO
  4. CH3COOH + CH3COCH3

Answer

(2) CH3COOH + HOOC.CH2CH3

Solution

Ozone adds across the C C bond to give an ozonide, which on hydrolysis gives a 1,2-diketone; the H2O2 formed oxidises it further and the C C bond is cleaved completely.

Each triply bonded carbon becomes a -COOH group:

CH3-C C-CH2CH3 [(ii) hydrolysis](i) O3 CH3-CO-CO-CH2CH3

H2O2 CH3COOH + HOOC-CH2CH3

The products are ethanoic acid and propanoic acid.
