Read the following four statements, (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) and select the right option having both correct statements. Statements : (i) Z scheme of light reaction takes place in presence of PS I only. (ii) Only PS I is functional in cyclic photophosphorylation. (iii) Cyclic photophosphorylation results into synthesis of ATP and NADPH2. (iv) Stroma lamellae lack PS II as well as NADP reductase.

  1. (ii) and (iv)
  2. (i) and (ii)
  3. (ii) and (iii)
  4. (iii) and (iv)

Answer

(1) (ii) and (iv)

Solution

(i) Incorrect: the Z scheme (non-cyclic electron transport) needs both PS II and PS I working in series.

(ii) Correct: as per NCERT, when only PS I is functional, the electron is circulated within the photosystem – cyclic photophosphorylation.

(iii) Incorrect: cyclic photophosphorylation results only in the synthesis of ATP, not of NADPH.

(iv) Correct: as per NCERT, the membranes or lamellae of the stroma lack PS II as well as NADP reductase enzyme; hence cyclic flow occurs there.

∴ (ii) and (iv) are correct.
