A nucleus at rest disintegrates into two smaller nuclei with their masses in the ratio of 2 : 1. After disintegration they will move :
- in opposite directions with speed in the ratio of 1 : 2 respectively.
- in the same direction with same speed.
- in opposite directions with speed in the ratio of 2 : 1 respectively.
- in opposite directions with the same speed.
Answer
(1) in opposite directions with speed in the ratio of 1 : 2 respectively.
Solution
Initial momentum is zero, so by conservation of momentum:
m1 v1 + m2 v2 = 0 v1 = - m2m1 v2
The minus sign shows that the two nuclei move in opposite directions, and
v1v2 = m2m1 = 12
Answer: (1)
