Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 9 April (Evening Shift)

A 1 kg mass is suspended from the ceiling by a rope of length 4 m. A horizontal force 'F' is applied at the mid point of the rope so that the rope makes an angle of 45 with respect to the vertical axis as shown in figure. The magnitude of F is : (Assume that the system is in equilibrium and g = 10 m/s2) [figure]

  1. 1 N
  2. 10 N
  3. 10 2 N
  4. 110 2 N

Answer

(2) 10 N

Solution

The lower part of the rope holds the block, so T2 = mg = 10 N.

At the mid point, for equilibrium:

vertical: T1 45 = T2 = mg

horizontal: T1 45 = F

Dividing, 45 = Fmg, so F = mg = 1 10 = 10 N

Answer: (2)
