In acidic medium, H2O2 changes Cr2O72- to CrO5 which has two (-O-O-) bonds. Oxidation state of Cr in CrO5 is

  1. +5
  2. +3
  3. +6
  4. -10

Answer

(3) +6

Solution

CrO5 (chromium peroxide, butterfly structure) has one Cr=O bond and two peroxide (-O-O-) linkages.

Oxide oxygen: 1 (-2) = -2; peroxide oxygens: 4 (-1) = -4

Let the oxidation state of Cr be x:

x + (-2) + (-4) = 0

⇒ x = +6

Answer: (3)
