Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 9 April (Evening Shift)

A satellite of 103 kg mass is revolving in circular orbit of radius 2R. If 104R6 J energy is supplied to the satellite, it would revolve in a new circular orbit of radius (use g = 10 m/s2, R = radius of earth)

  1. 4R
  2. 6R
  3. 2.5R
  4. 3R

Answer

(2) 6R

Solution

Total energy in an orbit of radius r: E = - GMm2r = - mgR22r (since GM = gR2)

Here mgR = 103 10 R = 104R.

At r = 2R: E1 = - mgR4 = - 104R4

After supplying energy: E2 = - 104R4 + 104R6 = - 104R12

- 104R22r = - 104R12 r = 6R
