The heats of atomisation of methane and ethane are 'x' kJ mol-1 and 'y' kJ mol-1 respectively. The longest wavelength ( ) of light capable of breaking the C-C bond can be expressed in SI unit as :

  1. NA hc250(y - 6x)
  2. NA hc (y - 6x4 )-1
  3. hc1000 ( y - 6x4 )-1
  4. NA hc250(4y - 6x)

Answer

(4) NA hc250(4y - 6x)

Solution

CH4(g) C(g) + 4H(g); a H = x

BE(C-H) = x4 kJ mol-1

C2H6(g) 2C(g) + 6H(g); a H = y

y = BE(C-C) + 6 x4

BE(C-C) = 4y - 6x4 kJ mol-1

Energy needed to break one C–C bond (in J):

E = (4y - 6x) 10004 NA

= 250(4y - 6x)NA J

E = hc , the longest wavelength is

= hcE = NA hc250(4y - 6x)

Answer: (4)
