Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
- (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
- (A) is not correct but (R) is correct
- Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
Answer
(2) (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
Solution
(A): rhombic and monoclinic sulphur both contain puckered S8 rings, while oxygen is diatomic O2 (O=O), so (A) is correct.
(R): small O does form pπ–pπ bonds with itself (O=O), but S also forms pπ–pπ multiple bonds with small atoms like C and N, e.g. S=C=S and S=C=N-. Since the part "not possible for sulphur" is wrong, (R) is not correct.
Answer: (2)
Note: The official NTA answer key gives option (4). Our faculty team has re-checked this question and finds option (2) correct, as explained above.
