Two p-n junction diodes D1 and D2 are connected as shown in figure. A and B are input signals and C is the output. The given circuit will function as a . [figure]
- AND Gate
- OR Gate
- NOR Gate
- NAND Gate
Answer
(1) AND Gate
Solution
The p-sides of both diodes are joined to +5 V through R and their n-sides go to the inputs A and B.
If an input is 0 (low), the diode connected to it is forward biased and conducts; the output C is pulled down to 0.
Only when A = 1 and B = 1 (both at 5 V), neither diode conducts, no current flows through R and C = 5 V, i.e. C = 1.
Truth table: (A, B) = (0, 0) C = 0; (0, 1) C = 0; (1, 0) C = 0; (1, 1) C = 1
C = A B, the circuit works as an AND gate.
