Which one of the following is not true regarding the release of energy during ATP synthesis through chemiosmosis? It involves:
- Breakdown of proton gradient
- Breakdown of electron gradient
- Movement of protons across the membrane to the stroma
- Reduction of NADP to NADPH2 on the stroma side of the membrane
Answer
(2) Breakdown of electron gradient
Solution
As per NCERT, chemiosmosis requires a membrane, a proton pump, a proton gradient and ATP synthase.
Protons accumulate in the lumen; NADP reductase on the stroma side removes protons from the stroma while reducing NADP.
The proton gradient is broken down as protons move across the membrane (through CF0 of ATP synthase) to the stroma ⇒ this releases the energy used for ATP synthesis.
∴ There is no 'electron gradient' in chemiosmosis.
