A uniform bar of length 12 cm and mass 20 m lies on a smooth horizontal table. Two point masses m and 2m are moving in opposite directions with same speed of v and in the same plane as the bar, as shown in figure. These masses strike the bar simultaneously and get stuck to it. After collision the entire system is rotating with angular frequency . The ratio of v and is : [figure]

Answer
(1) 33
Solution
Take the centre O of the bar as origin (distances in cm).
2m strikes at 2 cm on one side of O and m at 4 cm on the other side, moving in opposite directions.
Centre of mass after sticking: xcm = 20m(0) + 2m(-2) + m(4)23m = 0, i.e. at O.
No external horizontal force or torque acts, so angular momentum about O is conserved. Both masses turn the bar in the same sense:
Li = 2m v 2 + m v 4 = 8mv
IO = 20m(12)212 + 2m(2)2 + m(4)2
= 240m + 8m + 16m = 264m
8mv = 264m
v = 33 (cm)
