Silencing of mRNA has been used in producing transgenic plants resistant to:
- White rusts
- Nematodes
- Bacterial blights
- Bollworms
Answer
(2) Nematodes
Solution
As per NCERT, RNA interference (RNAi) involves silencing of a specific mRNA by a complementary dsRNA that binds to and prevents translation of the mRNA.
⇒ Using Agrobacterium vectors, nematode-specific genes were introduced into tobacco plants; the dsRNA formed silenced the mRNA of the nematode Meloidogyne incognita, so the parasite could not survive.
∴ mRNA silencing gave transgenic plants resistant to nematodes. (Bollworm resistance comes from Bt toxin genes.)
