What was the most significant trend in the evolution of modern man ( Homo sapiens) from his ancestors ?

  1. Upright posture
  2. Shortening of jaws
  3. Binocular vision
  4. Increasing cranial capacity

Answer

(4) Increasing cranial capacity

Solution

During human evolution the brain size rose steadily:

Homo habilis ≈ 650–800 cc ⇒ Homo erectus ≈ 900 cc ⇒ Neanderthal man ≈ 1400 cc.

∴ As per NCERT, the most significant trend in the evolution of modern man has been the increasing cranial capacity (brain size).

Answer: (4)
